German Fountain Istanbul
German Fountain Istanbul (Sultanahmet Alman Çeşmesi)
The German Fountain, also known as the Sultanahmet German Fountain, is located at the northern end of Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul, directly across from the Blue Mosque. This historic fountain is one of the most distinctive monuments in the area and reflects the political and cultural relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Germany at the end of the 19th century.

The fountain was constructed in 1898 to commemorate the visit of German Emperor Wilhelm II to Istanbul. Its parts were manufactured in Germany and later transported piece by piece to Istanbul, where the structure was assembled in its current location in Sultanahmet Square.
Architecturally, the fountain features a striking neo-Byzantine style design. Eight elegant marble columns support a large octagonal dome, creating a graceful pavilion-like structure. The interior of the dome is decorated with beautiful golden mosaics, giving the monument a distinctive and elegant appearance that stands out among the historic landmarks of the square.
Inside the dome are decorative medallions representing the two empires. Some of these medallions display the monogram of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II on a green background, while others feature the letter “W,” symbolizing Emperor Wilhelm II, set against a Prussian blue background. These details symbolize the diplomatic friendship and alliance between the Ottoman Empire and Germany during that period.
Today, the German Fountain remains one of the most recognizable monuments in Sultanahmet Square. Surrounded by iconic landmarks such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Hippodrome, the fountain continues to attract visitors interested in Istanbul’s rich history and architecture.
