Diyadin Hot Springs (Diyadin Kaplıcaları) – A Natural Spa Retreat in the Heart of Ağrı, Türkiye
Tucked away in the rugged and dramatic landscape of eastern Türkiye, Diyadin Kaplıcaları (Diyadin Hot Springs) in Ağrı Province is a hidden gem of geothermal wellness and natural tranquility. Surrounded by the imposing mountains and wide valleys of the Eastern Anatolia Region, this lesser-known thermal destination has been healing visitors for centuries, thanks to its rich mineral waters, volcanic terrain, and serene atmosphere.
A Historic Wellness Tradition
Diyadin Hot Springs lie near the town of Diyadin, approximately 60 kilometers from Ağrı city center. The springs are located along the foothills of Mount Tendürek, a dormant volcano that plays a central role in shaping the region’s geothermal activity. The mineral-rich waters bubble up from underground at temperatures between 70°C and 78°C, creating natural thermal pools that have long been regarded as therapeutic.
Historically, local communities have used these hot springs for their curative properties, treating ailments such as rheumatism, skin conditions, muscle and joint pain, and even gastrointestinal issues. In recent decades, the area has seen modest development, including thermal hotels and spa facilities, although it still retains its authentic, rustic charm.
What to Expect at Diyadin Kaplıcaları
Visitors to Diyadin Kaplıcaları can enjoy both public and private bathing options. A few small thermal hotels and health centers in the area offer indoor thermal pools, family baths, and mud therapy treatments. While the infrastructure is not as modern or commercial as some western Türkiye spa resorts, this is precisely what makes Diyadin so special—it offers a raw, authentic, and rejuvenating experience, surrounded by unspoiled nature.
In addition to soaking in the mineral waters, many visitors combine their thermal visit with exploration of the region’s natural wonders. The area is known for its stunning rock formations, especially the “Diyadin Fairy Chimneys” (Peri Bacaları), similar to those in Cappadocia, and the basalt columns and volcanic features of Tendürek Mountain. These attractions make Diyadin an excellent destination for eco-tourists, hikers, and photographers.
Facilities and Accessibility
While Diyadin Kaplıcaları remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, several thermal hotels and municipal facilities operate in the area. Some of these include private rooms for families or individuals, gender-separated baths, and wellness treatments such as thermal mud applications and massage services.
Accommodation in the area is basic but comfortable, with thermal hotels offering half-board options and packages that include access to the thermal pools. Due to the elevation and colder winters, most visitors prefer to come between late spring and early autumn.
How to Get There
Diyadin is easily accessible by road from Ağrı city (about a 1-hour drive). Ağrı Ahmed-i Hani Airport is the nearest airport, with regular domestic flights from major cities like Ankara and Istanbul. From the airport, you can rent a car or take a shuttle to Diyadin. Buses and minibuses (dolmuş) also operate from Ağrı to Diyadin daily.
For those traveling from neighboring provinces like Van or Iğdır, Diyadin can be a scenic detour with the added bonus of relaxation and health benefits.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Diyadin Kaplıcaları is between May and October, when the weather is mild and ideal for outdoor exploration and thermal spa experiences. Winters can be quite harsh due to the region’s elevation and climate, but those seeking a snowy, steamy contrast can enjoy the springs year-round.
