Anatolian Fortress – Early Ottoman Stronghold on the Bosphorus

Anatolian Fortress (Anadoluhisari) is one of the oldest Ottoman military structures in Istanbul, located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus where the Göksu Stream meets the strait.

This historic fortress played a key role in early Ottoman plans to conquer Constantinople and remains an important symbol of Ottoman expansion.

History of Anatolian Fortress

The fortress was built between 1394 and 1395 by Sultan Bayezid I (Bayezid the Thunderbolt).

It was constructed as part of the Ottoman strategy to control the Bosphorus and prepare for the conquest of Constantinople.

Later, in the 15th century, Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror) strengthened the fortress by adding thicker defensive walls and additional bastions, especially during the construction of Rumeli Fortress on the opposite shore.

Together, the two fortresses allowed the Ottomans to fully control maritime traffic through the Bosphorus.

Architecture of the Fortress

The original structure of Anatolian Fortress consisted of:

• a square central tower approximately 25 meters high

• defensive walls surrounding the tower

Later additions included:

• reinforced outer walls

• defensive bastions

The design reflects early Ottoman military architecture focused on strategic control rather than monumental appearance.

Anatolian Fortress is located in one of the most scenic areas of Istanbul.

The surrounding area was historically known as one of the city’s most popular Bosphorus promenades, especially around the Göksu Stream.
