Nestled in the heart of İznik, Aya Sofya ( Hagia Sophia ) stands as a testament to centuries of transformation. Originally built during Emperor Justinian’s reign, this sacred site has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, from Byzantine grandeur to Ottoman elegance.
Despite enduring earthquakes, fires, and reconstructions, Aya Sofya ( Hagia Sophia ) İznik remains a captivating landmark. The ruins reveal layers of history, with remnants of three different structures blending Byzantine and Ottoman influences. Inside, visitors can admire the surviving mosaic floors and a striking mural of Jesus, Mary, and John the Baptist, offering a glimpse into the site’s spiritual past.
Following the Ottoman conquest, the church was converted into a mosque, and after a devastating fire in the 16th century, Mimar Sinan masterfully restored it, adorning the walls with İznik’s famous tiles. Today, surrounded by a peaceful rose garden, Aya Sofya ( Hagia Sophia ) İznik invites history lovers and travelers to step into its storied past.It continued to operate as a mosque until 1935, when it was designated as a museum under the regime of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In November 2011 it was again converted into a mosque.[
Whether you find its doors open or closed, the echoes of centuries linger in its walls, making Aya Sofya ( Hagia Sophia ) İznik an unmissable stop in your İznik travel itinerary.
