Yeni Valide Mosque – A Late Classical Ottoman Landmark
Located in the heart of Uskudar, the Yeni Valide Mosque is one of the last significant examples of Classical Ottoman architecture before the transition to the Baroque period.
Despite its central location, the mosque offers a calm and balanced atmosphere.

History of Yeni Valide Mosque
The mosque was commissioned by Emetullah Râbia Gülnûş Sultan, the mother of Sultan Ahmed III.
- built between 1708 and 1710
- often mistakenly attributed to Sultan Ahmed III
- actually ordered by the Valide Sultan herself
It represents the final phase of the classical Ottoman architectural tradition, often described as the last period of the “Sinan School”.
Architectural Features
The mosque follows a traditional square plan with a central dome.
- main dome supported by four semi-domes
- two minarets with double balconies
- symmetrical and balanced design
Its architecture reflects the elegance and discipline of classical Ottoman design, just before stylistic changes began.

Interior Design
Inside the mosque, visitors can see:
- refined calligraphy by Hezarfen Mehmet Efendi
- harmonious proportions and clean lines
- simple yet elegant decoration
The interior emphasizes space, light, and symmetry rather than heavy ornamentation.

The Kulliye (Complex)
Yeni Valide Mosque is part of a larger Ottoman complex.
It includes:
- imaret (public kitchen)
- arasta (market area)
- primary school
- tomb of Gülnûş Sultan
- shadirvan (ablution fountain)
- muvakkithane (timekeeping room)
This reflects the Ottoman approach of combining religious, social, and educational functions.
Views and Experience
One of the most appealing aspects of the mosque is its atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy:
- a peaceful courtyard
- a quiet garden area
- a break from the busy streets of Uskudar
It feels more intimate and less crowded than major imperial mosques.
Cultural Significance
The mosque represents:
- the influence of Valide Sultans in Ottoman architecture
