Phanar (Fener) Greek Orthodox Patriarchate
The Phanar Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, located in the historic Fener district of Istanbul, is one of the most important religious institutions of the Eastern Orthodox world. For centuries it has served as the spiritual center of Orthodox Christianity and the residence of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.
The Patriarchate is situated on Sadrazam Ali Paşa Street and is centered around the historic Church of St. George, which remains the main cathedral of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

History of the Patriarchate
After Constantine the Great moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople in the 4th century, the Christian church in the city gradually gained prominence.
During the First Council of Constantinople in 381, the bishop of Constantinople was granted authority equal to that of the bishop of Rome, establishing the city as one of the leading centers of Christianity.
Following later councils, five major patriarchates were recognized as the primary centers of the Christian world:
Rome
Constantinople
Alexandria
Antioch
Jerusalem
The Great Schism of 1054
Tensions between the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity eventually led to the Great Schism of 1054, which divided the Christian world into two major traditions:
Roman Catholic Church in the West
Eastern Orthodox Church in the East
After this division, Constantinople remained the leading center of the Orthodox Christian world.
The Patriarchate in the Ottoman Period
Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the patriarch Athanasios II left the city due to disputes regarding the union of the churches.
Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror) later reorganized the Patriarchate and supported the election of a new patriarch, ensuring that the institution continued to function under Ottoman rule.
This decision allowed the Orthodox Christian community to maintain its religious leadership within the empire.
Settlement in Fener
After operating from several locations, the Patriarchate permanently settled in Fener in 1602.
The current complex consists of:
the Church of St. George
administrative buildings
courtyards surrounded by high walls
The Church of St. George contains important religious relics and icons that are highly significant for the Orthodox faith.
