It is located in 75 km east of Antalya. It is reached by going 4 km more after turning to Side from Antalya-Alanya Highway. Side established on a small peninsula extending to Mediterranean Sea is a versatile tourism town that many restaurants and bars besides its rich historical remains.
According to Strabo, ancient city was established by colonists from Cyme in 696. Today’s settlement developed on this peninsula is intertwined with the ancient city. The city where magnificent structures were built during Roman period lived its heyday in the 2nd and 3rd century A.D. . Peninsula is entered from a gate on walls built in the 2nd century B.C. Remains of niche structure outside of the walls across the gate are a fountain dated to 2nd century A.D. . Water of the fountain which was originally three-story came from Manavgat River. Columned street opens to the gate is still used today. Theater, agora and baths in the center of the peninsula are the first prominent structures. Baths on the right of the road and used as Side Museum is dated to 5th century A.D. It consists of five places covered by barrel vaults. Wide area across the baths in size of 90 meters to 94 meters was the commercial agora of the city.
15.000 seated magnificent theaters next to agora are dated to 2nd century A.D. It is in a Roman theater type rising on arches and vaults for not having a slope to lean. It was converted into an open air church in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D.
Road continuing to the coast in the east of commercial agora reaches to state agora. East of the state agora which is in size of 69 meters to 88 meters consists of three rooms. The middle room was allocated to emperor to use during ceremonies. The statues found in here are protected in the museum
In this part, another attractive remain is walls. These interior city walls built in the 4th century A.D. was for the easier protection of people living in the mountainous region from the attacks of hordes. Arched gate providing entrance to the interior city is next to the theater. Main Street continues south to the coast from the gate. In the coastal region, the remains of the temple can be seen.
