The Cistern of Philoxenos (Binbirdirek) is across the Court House. Beneath the bustling streets of Istanbul lies a hidden world of history and mystery. The Cistern of Philoxenos, locally known as Binbirdirek, is one of the city’s most intriguing subterranean treasures. Often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts, this ancient cistern holds a story that deserves to be uncovered. It was made by one of the senators of the city, Philoxenos, to meet the water needs of the palace after moving the capital of the Roman Empire to Istanbul.

The Cistern of Philoxenos is in the size of 64 to 56 meters and consists of 244 columns. Pillars connected to each other by aqueduct carries the cross-vaulted ceiling.  Constructed during the late Roman and early Byzantine periods, the Cistern of Philoxenos was a vital part of Istanbul’s water supply system. It lay forgotten for centuries, hidden under layers of history and modernity, until its rediscovery in the 1960s. Today, it stands as a testament to Istanbul’s rich past.

The Binbirdirek cistern is a masterpiece of underground engineering. Its name, which means “a thousand and one columns,” aptly describes its architecture. As you step inside, you’re greeted by a forest of slender marble columns supporting a vast vaulted ceiling. The play of light and shadow, coupled with the gentle sound of dripping water, creates an otherworldly atmosphere that’s perfect for contemplation.

The Cistern of Philoxenos is often overlooked by tourists, which is a part of its charm. Visiting it offers a quieter and more intimate experience compared to the crowded Hagia Sophia or Topkapi Palace. It’s a hidden gem waiting for those who seek to uncover Istanbul’s lesser-known treasures.
