Tekfur (Porphyrogenitus) Palace Museum is between Edirnekapi and Eğrikapi. Only the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus remains from Blachernae Palace which was used in the last times of Byzantine. It is assumed to be from the 13th century. Nestled within the historic walls of Constantinople, the Tekfur Palace dates back to the 13th century, serving as a residence for the Byzantine emperors. While it may not match the grandeur of its contemporaries, it offers a unique glimpse into the daily life of Byzantine royalty. The name “Tekfur” derives from the Turkish word “tekfur,” meaning “palace” or “royalty. The palace has a rectangular plan directed to East and West, West façade of it is adjacent to the walls. Only the body part of the palace is standing. Its front façade is faced to a courtyard in front of the Golden Horn. Window arches of the structure are made of red brick and white stone which create a beautiful decorative item.
After centuries of neglect, the Tekfur Palace underwent extensive restoration, transforming it into a museum. The careful preservation of its original structure, including its brickwork and wooden beams, allows visitors to admire the craftsmanship of the era. As you walk through the rooms, you can almost hear the whispers of Byzantine emperors and their court.
A visit to the Tekfur Palace Museum is like stepping back in time, as you connect with the legacy of the Byzantine Empire. It’s a place where history and art intertwine, where you can appreciate the cultural tapestry of Istanbul, which spans centuries.
