Discover the Rich Heritage of the Roman-Era Tower

Situated in the heart of Edirne, Turkey, the Edirne Macedonian Tower stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. This tower is an ancient bastion built during the Roman era and is the sole surviving tower among the four corner towers that once adorned the city walls.

Roots in Roman History

Dating back 1500 years, the tower, also known as the Edirne Old Clock Tower, was originally commissioned as a wooden structure by the Roman ruler Hadrianus. Over the centuries, it underwent various transformations, with the most significant changes occurring in 1867 under the supervision of Edirne Governor Hacı İzzet Paşa. Wooden floors and clocks were added, leading to its recognition as the “Clock Tower.”

Reconstruction and Earthquake Damage

In 1894, the wooden section of the tower was replaced with a new structure made of stone and brick. However, the tower faced adversity in 1953 when a devastating earthquake caused significant damage. In response, additional floors and the clock section were demolished with explosives, as they were deemed to compromise the city’s aesthetic.

Archaeological Discoveries

Between 1999 and 2003, excavation work unearthed fascinating artifacts, including ceramic kilns from the 2nd century AD, structures believed to be grain silos made of adobe, and fragments of bones.

Preserving Heritage: Restoration Initiatives

In 2021, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism initiated restoration efforts for the Macedonian Tower. The aim is not only to preserve this historical landmark but also to enhance its accessibility for future generations.

Edirne Clock Tower: A Symbol of Time and Endurance

In 1886, a wooden extension was added to the tower, transforming it into a clock tower. The wooden section was replaced with stone and brick in 1894, only to face the unfortunate fate of demolition in 1953 due to earthquake damage.

Echoes of the Past: Saat Kuleleri Parkı

The legacy of the Edirne Clock Tower is immortalized in Saat Kuleleri Parkı in Safranbolu. Opened in 2012, the park features a model of the Edirne Clock Tower, allowing visitors to witness the passage of time through this iconic structure.

Explore the Macedonian Tower and delve into the captivating history of Edirne, where the past seamlessly blends with the present.
