Çeşme Kalesi, with dominating walls, was built in the 16th century to defend the coast from pirates. The Fortress offers great views of the town and there is a museum located in the north tower. There is a statue, with its back facing the fortress, of Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha, a man sold to slavery. Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha rose through the ranks of the Ottoman Empire, quickly becoming a fleet commander. Upon returning to Cesme, he was highly praised and promoted to grand vizier
