Placid Gündoğan Bay, deepest on the the Bodrum Peninsula, offers a sandy beach with good swimming right in the centre and stays relatively sedate at night. Most of its part- or full-time occupants in the villas climbing halfway up the hills on both sides are well-off retirees from İstanbul or Ankara who, despite their secularist proclivities, have not been able to get the local imam to turn down the volume at the mosque – about the only noise that could jolt you out of bed here.
Settlement here probably began around AD 1100, though an earlier Roman town, Vara, had existed nearby. In 1961 the village’s original Greek name (Farilya) was changed to Gündoğan.
