Arykanda Ancient City is one of the most impressively preserved and dramatically located cities of ancient Lycia, situated near the village of Arif in the Elmalı district of Antalya Province, Türkiye. Built on steep mountain terraces along the slopes of the Taurus Mountains, Arykanda is renowned for its harmonious architecture, advanced urban planning, and breathtaking natural setting.
The origins of Arykanda date back to at least the 5th century BCE, although archaeological evidence suggests earlier settlement. Unlike many Lycian cities located near the coast, Arykanda developed inland, thriving as a self-sufficient mountain city. Its name is believed to be of Anatolian origin, reflecting deep local roots rather than Greek colonization.
During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, Arykanda reached its peak. The city was carefully designed to follow the natural contours of the mountain, resulting in a unique terraced layout. Monumental structures such as the theatre, odeon, stadium, agora, baths, necropolis, and gymnasium were arranged on different levels, connected by stone stairways and paths.
One of Arykanda’s most remarkable features is its engineering sophistication. Water systems, cisterns, and baths demonstrate a high level of technical knowledge, while inscriptions and statues reveal a prosperous civic life. The city continued to be inhabited during the Byzantine era before gradually being abandoned.
Today, Arykanda offers visitors an immersive experience where architecture, landscape, and silence blend seamlessly. Surrounded by forests and mountain air, the site feels untouched and authentic. It is an exceptional destination for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path ancient cities, photography, and a deeper connection with Lycian civilization.
