EDIRNE

Edirne is the border city of Turkey with Bulgaria and Greece, and gate to Europe. It was established in the juncture of Arda and Tunca Rivers with Maritsa River. Edirne, which was entered the domination of Rome in 168 B.C. was turned into a city by Emperor Hadrian in 123 and 124 A.D., and changed its name to Hadrianopolis.

It was taken over by Ottomans in 1361 by Ottoman army under the command of Lala Sahin Pasha defeating Byzantine army in Sazlidere. Ottoman capital was moved to Edirne from Bursa in 1361, but it preserved this status for only 92 years until Istanbul was conquered.

Edirne, which was a small city not expanding from city walls until it became the capital, was populated with neighborhoods outside the walls in Ottoman period, it was built with monumental mosques, bridges, bazaars and caravanserai in 15th and 16th century and the population was increased rapidly.

Selimiye Mosque, one of the most important monumental structures of Ottoman period, is also located in Edirne. Eski Mosque (1403-1414) and the Üç Şerefeli Mosque (1438-1447) that are close to Selimiye are among the important historical works that should be seen.

Bridges which enhance the appearance of the city view besides splendid mosques in Edirne which gets more beautiful by Tunca, Arda and Maritsa Rivers, are important. There are eight historical bridges built by many famous architects such as Mimar Sinan and Sedefkar Mehmed Aga.

 

The historical bazaars of the city continue to function. Bedesten Bazaar which was built by Architect Alaeddin approximately in 1418 is adjacent to Eski Mosque. Ali Pasha Bazaar (Covered Bazaar) which is opened to Saraclar Street with three doors, which has numerous cafes and restaurants, was built by Mimar Sinan in 1569. Arasta Bazaar next to Selimiye Mosque is one of the most visited bazaars with its souvenir shops.

Must-see places: Selimiye Mosque, Üç Şerefeli Mosque, Old Mosque, Mosque of Bayezid II.

Shopping: Shopping at Ali Pasha Bazaar and the Selimiye Arasta. Purchasing souvenirs such as traditional handcrafts. Famous Fruit Soap of Edirne can be purchased.
