KARATEPE (BLACK HILL) – ASLANTAŞ

Karatepe located near Kadirli, and 130 km away from Adana, is a late Hittite city established in the 8th century B.C. King Asitavada built here as a border fortress against the wild tribes in the north. Entrance gate of the fortress which was the summer palace of King Asitavada is decorated with encrypted and relief orthostats. Soldiers, queen, hunting, music and feast scenes among the reliefs are notable. Sphinx and lion figures that protect the city symbolically were placed at the gates. Two inscriptions carved on orthostats in Hittite hieroglyphs and Phoenician language has played an important role in solving the Hittite hieroglyphs. Karatepe (Black Hill) which exhibits one of the most important examples of late Hittite arts is used as an open-air museum.
