Amasya

Amasya where Yesilirmak passes in the middle of the city has maintained its importance in all periods because of its location. It was the center of Pontus Kingdom, founded at the beginning of the 3rd century B.C. Amasya Castle can be seen a steep rocks landing to Yesilirmak overlooking to the city. 18 Rock (King) Tombs carved on the slopes of the castle belong to Pontus kings. Famous geographer Strabo (64 B.C.-23 A.D.) was also born and died in Amasya.

Amasya was an important center throughout the history and it is very rich in terms of historical monuments. Works belonging to various civilizations dominated the region are exhibited in chronological order in Amasya Museum. Hazeranlar Mansion, built in 1872 and one of the examples of beautiful Amasya house can be visited as a home museum.

 

Byzantine Church which was built in 610 was converted into a mosque getting the name Fethiye. Seljuk Burmali Mosque (1237-1247) and Gökmedrese Mosque (1266-1267) are important Seljuk works. The only work reached from Ilhanli period is Ilkhan Bimarhane which was built in between 1308 and 1309. The hospital where medical education was given until the mid-19rd century, mental patients were treated with music.

 

The first Ottoman work in Amasya is Gümüşlü Mosque which was built in 1326. Kulliye of Bayezit II (148d5-1486) which consists of a mosque, a madrasah and a mansion, Bayezid Pasha Mosque (1414) and Kapı Aga Madrasah (1488) which is exotic with its octagonal plan scheme are the main structures.
