This region covering the western part of Turkey gets its name from Aegean Sea. Range of mountains extending to the coast on east-west direction and plains in the debris "areas between these mountains determines the land forms. In this regard, access to interior Anatolia can be provided. Appropriate Mediterranean climate; allows growing products such as tobacco, cotton grapes, figs and olives etc.
The potential of the region about tourism value is high. Holiday resorts starting from Ayvalik, extending to Çeşme, Bodrum and Marmaris are attraction points for local and foreign tourists. Fertile soil of the region provides a variety of civilizations to acquire the region as home. The magnificent ancient cities of Anatolia such as Bergama, Ephesus, Hierapolis unfold how important the region historically. All of the seven churches mentioned in the Bible are within the boundaries of the region. These are Ephesus (Selcuk), Smyrna (Izmir), Pergamum, Sardis (Salihli), Philadelphia (Alaşehir), Laodicea (Denizli) and Thyateira (Akhisar).
